During Applefest in September
of 1996, the Fire Division identified the need to be able to bring
Emergency Medical Services to citizens in the festival crowd in
a timely manner. Penetrating the festival crowd with the ambulance
proved to be a time consuming and frustrating process. This equated
to an unacceptable degradation of service to the community and visitors.
When
a Cannondale Mountain Bike became available through the Lebanon
Police Division bicycle auction, Fire Division members saw the possibility
to equip the bike with a fully automatic defibrillator and EMS equipment
to provide a method of EMS delivery which could quickly maneuver
through the festival crowds.
The
bike is equipped with a Physio Control LifePak 500 fully automatic
defibrillator, EMS equipment and EMS supplies which allow the EMT
or Paramedic riding the bike to begin treating a customer before
the ambulance is able to work it's way through the crowd.
The EMS bike program has proven to be a very effective
tool in bringing improved service to our customers.
NOTE: All of the Fire Division's
vehicles carry difibrillators to allow the crew of any vehicle to
begin treatment should they arrive at the scene of a heart attack
requiring the administration of a defibrillator.
